Open Water paddlers meet by announcement at Lake Lansing.

Open Water is any place where it is possible to be at least one mile from shore in any direction. Whether in a biadarka, canoe, kon-tiki, surf-ski or sea kayak, the elements that must considered are wind, waves, surf, weather, tides and currents.

Open water travel takes people to beautiful and remote places, but requires a high degree of skill and preparation to be done safely.

Within the Open Water Committee emphasis is placed on skill development, conditioning, rescue practice and surf skills using both the BCU (British Canoe Union) and ACA (American Canoe Association) curricula for guidance.

In the usuallly benign waters in and about Lansing, Open Water paddlers gather to practice with each other. Road trips for surf play in the Fall and a number of organized weekend trips during the season are also planned.

The Open Water Committee provides an educational and social environment for sea kayakers to expand their paddling skills and to network with others in their sport throughout Michigan.

We emphasize safety by encouraging our members to get appropriate skills, equipment, and physical conditioning; and to use good judgment in matching their choice of paddling destination with their current abilities.

PEARSON'S LAWS OF SEA KAYAKING
By Karl Pearson

This listing is a compilation of serious and not-so-serious truisms that have been observed in a decade of sea kayaking

PEARSON'S FIRST LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
Kayakers always buy vehicles that are four inches taller than they can reach.

PEARSON'S SECOND LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
No matter how large the body of water, or how few the kayaks, they will make physical contact.

PEARSON'S THIRD LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
You will always need whatever you decide not to take that day.

PEARSON'S FOURTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
In every group, someone will have mis-represented their abilities in order to be included.

PEARSON'S FIFTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
When someone looks to be having trouble, but says they're okay - they're not.

PEARSON'S SIXTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
A small boat on the horizon will be huge by the time you get to where it is going.

PEARSON'S SEVENTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
If you borrow something, even for a moment, it will not float . . .

PEARSON'S EIGHTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
There are two kinds of sea kayakers: those who have been sea-sick, and those that have not yet been sea-sick.

PEARSON'S NINTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
The bigger, heavier or slower the boat - the smaller the blade.

PEARSON'S TENTH LAW OF SEA KAYAKING:
The answer to 90% of all paddling problems is: "Loosen your grip !"
